 About Us - Historic Overview

Welcome to the Town of Wilton.

New residents such as you generally have done the research to know that Wilton has a lot to offer with its shopping areas, good schools, proximity to Saratoga Springs and its commitment to children, recreation and the various ongoing “quality of life” projects in process. It truly is a great place to live.

The Town strongly supports the heritage of the community. The Friends of Ulysses S. Grant maintain Grant’s Cottage, a state owned historic landmark on the summit of Mt. McGregor. Eastern Outlook provides a breathtaking view of Wilton.  It is definitely a "must see!"

Ulysses S. Grant spent his last weeks finishing his memoirs prior to his death at the Cottage on July 23, 1885. The Cottage is open from Memorial Day until mid-October. Hours of operation can be obtained by calling 583-3645. Tours may also be arranged.  It is well worth a visit.

At the base of the Mountain, the Wilton Heritage Society operates a museum in the former Wiltonville Church at the corner of Corinth Mountain Road (aka County Road 101),Parkhurst and Mt. McGregor Road. This museum shows the history of the Town from its creation in 1818 to the present. It is open to the public at no charge from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, Friday through Sunday 1pm to 4pm.

We hope you will take the time to visit them and learn more about Wilton, the place that you have decided to call Home.  If you find it difficult to visit, Jeannine Woutersz, our Town Historian, has created a striking tribute to the Town in her recently released picture book entitled “Images of America- Wilton”. This book combines more than two hundred historical images on the Town of Wilton. This memorable book is available for $21.00. Wilton Historical Calendars are also available for $5.00.  All proceeds of the book will benefit the “Wilton Heritage Museum”.

To obtain a copy of the book and/or calendar, please stop in to the Town Hall or contact Jeannine Woutersz at 581-8646.  The Wilton Heritage Society may be reached at 583-3645.
