- Mosquito Program begins April 8, 2008
Mosquito dunks are donut shaped briquet that contain BTi, a naturally occurring bacteria. This bacteria is 'species specific' and affects only mosquito and black fly larvae. It is environmentally friendly and non-toxic to non-target organisms. It kills mosquito larvae BEFORE they develop into adults that fly, bite and breed.
Since a female mosquito can lay up to 1,000 eggs during her lifetime, the effect of the larvacide is more long term than aerial adulticide spraying which merely kills the adult that has already reproduced.
The Town of Wilton will no longer supply/apply dunks in regulated wetland areas. We encourage the residents who do not have state or federally regulated wetlands but have standing water on their property to come in to the Town Hall on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00-1:00 pm and pick up mosquito dunks to place on their property. The program will run April - August. We also have a short training video if you are unsure of the application of these dunks.
